What to Expect While Recovering from All-on-4 Surgery

Thanks to All-on-4, it’s possible to replace all of your missing teeth at once with just four dental implant posts. As part of the process, the posts will need to be surgically inserted into your jaw. Naturally, it will take some time for your mouth to heal after this procedure. It pays to be prepared ahead of time so that you can make sure the recovery process goes smoothly; here’s a brief look at what you can expect after your All-on-4 surgery.

What Will the Days Immediately After All-on-4 Surgery Be Like?

You’ll need to spend some time resting at home following your All-on-4 surgery. In many cases, you’ll be able to return to work after two or three days of rest, but you’ll still need to refrain from engaging in any sort of vigorous exercise for about a week or so.

It’s normal to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bleeding after receiving All-on-4 dental implants. Your dentist will give you tips for managing these symptoms, such as taking over-the-counter pain medication or applying a cold compress to any swollen areas. Bleeding usually stops within the first couple of days; meanwhile, discomfort and swelling typically peak within three days and gradually fade away on their own afterward.

What Can You Eat After All-on-4?

For about three months following your All-on-4 surgery, you will need to stick to a diet of soft and liquid foods. This is to avoid putting too much pressure on your dental implants while they’re bonding with your jawbone. Some good options for foods that you can eat during your All-on-4 recovery include mashed potatoes, applesauce, and scrambled eggs. You should also be able to enjoy certain soups, such as chicken broth.

How Long Will It Take for the Mouth to Fully Heal After All-on-4?

Even though you’ll be able to return to your regular activities within a few days after your All-on-4 surgery, the healing process typically takes weeks. During this time, pay close attention to what’s going on inside your mouth. If your post-surgery symptoms last longer than they should or seem to be growing in severity, call your dentist right away.

The All-on-4 recovery process is a necessary step on your journey toward a sturdy, stable new smile. If you have any questions or concerns about what will happen while your mouth is healing, let your dentist know; they’ll be more than happy to provide you with the answers you need.
